DATMS Therapy

Dattathreya Ayurveda Therapy for Multiple Sclerosis is a unique method of originated about a century back to treat Neurological diseases. These methods of treatment practice were refined and rearranged in accordance with the pathology process of Multiple Sclerosis.

:The first year of treatment is aimed at controlling the progression of the disease and sustaining the positive changes that are acquired during the time of treatment.
:MS is a curable disorder in the initial stage. MS can be controlled and the patient could lead a normal life according to Ayurvedic consideration. (See also the question no: 2 – interview with Vaidya Dr Prasanth Raghavan.)
:Advanced stage considered as above the 6.5 of EDSS mark. (More specific categorization is done during the time of DATMS consultation on the individual specialty).
A 45 days DATMS therapy is advised for the patients in the initial stage or uncomplicated Multiple Sclerosis, EDSS up to 5.5. And 60 days when you have diagnosed for more than 6 years or having visible and fast deteriorating MS with multiple exacerbations in a short duration of time corresponding to multiple active lesions and in Primary Progressive MS. This is a general and rough calculation but a more accurate duration could be given during consultation.
  • Adhi-Stana Chikitsa or Treating the source of illness : the central nervous system.
  • Agni Sara Chikitsa or Reorganizing or fine tuning the metabolism : Correcting the digestive fire in a person so that the cellular metabolism improves.
  • Kaya Sattwaor Mind Body Balancing.
  • Dathu Shuddhi or Palliation of accompanying illness or pathology.

DATMS is a system that uses group of therapies aimed at treating the source of the disease, where palliation of symptoms happens on its own accord. During the treatment period the patient will undergo various types of therapies with numerous herbal preparations according to the constitution of the patient, metabolic state, mental state, severity of the disease, symptom, etc. The duration of the treatment for a single day is approximately 210-300 minutes.

Shirovasti -The primary daily treatment is done for the central nervous system, where potentiated herbal oil is poured onto the scalp within a leather cap and allowed to remain for 60 to 150 minutes. The effect of this treatment is mostly depending on the type of oils used. Here we use the potentiated herbal oil( see also herbal oil preparation).

The ultimate care for the source of your being. Majority of the illness can only be healed by treating the Neurological system, the ultimate receptacle, the Vata. And Shiro Vasti is the Key. This therapy is the King's therapy in Ayurveda, but it makes sense only if high quality potentiated herbal oils are available. In Charaka the effect of this treatment is described as ‘unimaginable’.

A leather hat is fixed over the head. Potentiated medicated oil (not the oil what you use for the body) depending upon the constitution and illness is allowed to remain for a specified time (to be recognized by the Pulse).

The foremost aspect of the whole treatment is the usage of potentiated herbal oils which are taken individually or in mixture of maximum 3 different kinds of herbal oils. The oil is replaced every 3 days with a fresh mixture for maximum efficacy. One of the main types of oil contains around 65 different kinds of herbs and requires 3 weeks to prepare. The herbal oils and the herbs used in the treatments are purely herbal in origin and tested for non-toxicity from heavy metals or other toxic ingredients. The oils used for DATMS therapy have been developed and patented by the Raghavan family.

Kanji dhara-''A simple therapy on appearance Intriguing and delicate with lightning effect the healthy says, that set a patter n of joy And for the ill, A hope to be true'' .

  • A steady flow of herbal decoction is gently moved to different area of the body at varying heights and circumference of the outlet of the pot depending on the size of the first digit of the small finger, constitution, age, and mind and body state.
  • To be done in all neurological illness and many others.
  • This therapy is of great value in Ayurveda and for some reason it is not practiced widely. May be it is considered mostly as a sudation therapy.
  • While if you are using a pot (what is prescribed in the classical texts) that forms a 'vortex' while flowing and this will not be there when a electric motor is used even though a uniform flow is guaranteed. And in result the former had proven to be superior.
Thaila dhara-
This is same as that of Kanji Dhara were medicated Oil is the medium.
Nasya- Charaka says, Nostrils are the door to brain, while explaining Nasya therapy. Administering minute amount herbal potency through the nostrils. An effective treatment for disorders pertaining to Central Nervous System. Here herbal extract, herbal powder, medicated oils, mediated milk etc are used.

Basti – Oil and Kashaya basti (two among the Panchkarma)

Anuvasana Vasti-Enema by the usage of herbal oil or other oily liquids. Often it will be done alternating with Nirooha Vasti.

Nirooha Vasti or Asthapana Vasti-Nirooha means unimaginable. This treatment can bring unimaginable effect. Capable of curing the illnesses in short time.
A herbal decoction enema, what is specially prepared for the patient.

Abhyanga– Application and massaging the body with medicated oil.
This treatment resembles the common massage physically but fundamentally the element of both differs. Here one has to consider the constitution, illnesses, age, sex, body strength, rhythm in which the massage is done, considering different vital points (mama) in the body - To be decided on ones systems organization and mental status in Toto. So Abhyanga largely depends on the person who is doing it.

Njavarakizhi- A special type of rice harvested only in Kerala. The Rice which is cooked with the root of Bala, Ashwaganda etc. This is pasted and massaged or made to bolus and rhythmic massage is given.

There are other therapies what are done apart for the above like Panchakarma ,Pichu, Thalam (herbal poultice), Pathra dharanam (covering with medicinal leaves), shirodhara, breathing of herbs, svedana.

Herbal preparations are taken internally by the patients during and after the treatment. They are purely herbal in origin and no addition of materials other than herbs. The combinations of herbs are individual to ones constitution. They are made from hand picked herbs and hand pounded.

Therapeutic Yoga postures are given. Each patient is given individual yoga postures depending upon their body constitution and symptoms.  These will improve the coordination, balance, power in the legs, flexibility.

The fundamental criteria for success in treating complex disorders in Ayurveda depend on the quality of herbal preparations. Only treatment-oriented herbal recipes are made in our pharmacy and they are not available for sales elsewhere. The herbal preparations are created in limited quantities to ensure the quality. The manufacturing unit located in Kerala, India is closely controlled and has the Central Government’s highest standard of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice).

All herbs are tested for heavy metals and other toxins.

Our medicated oils that are used for Neurological illnesses are custom made and are potentiated several times for superior effect.

prepare

  • Sesame oil as the basis oil.
  • Water is added 4 - 8 times the oil.
  • Herbal paste ¼ the quantity of oil.
  • Herbal decoction – 2 times that of oil.
  • Fresh Herbal extracts – same quantity as that of oil.

The above ingredients are heated in mild fire in a traditional vessel made of an of a 5 metal alloy called  . The oil is slowly stirred continuously during the entire process to ensure the heat is absorbed uniformly. When the herbal paste has reached a stage which is called the  (soft consistency - where there is percolated water molecules). At this stage the oil is filtered and taken. This stage may remain for a few minutes in the entire process and the oil need to be filtered within minutes. The whole process of preparing the oil will take around 12-15 days and during this time the temperature of the oil is kept always at 75-80 degree Celsius.

Above is a normal preparation of medicated oil. For ‘high seasoned’ and concentrated herbal oils for DATMS therapy, one has to repeatedly add herbal extracts and herbal decoctions. That means for a 11 times potentiated oil you have to add the extract and the decoction 11 times. These oils are being used in therapies like Shirovasthi,Shirodhara, Nasya etc. These oils will have superior effect. This process of making the oil takes around 3-4 weeks time to prepare. We use 7 different types of herbal oils in the treatment of MS. These oils are used individually or in combination of oils. When it is needed custom made oils for the individual are used.

The herbs like Bruhathi etc, that are difficult to procure from the market because of non availability are being planted in our farm. And agriculturists are given seeds, plant cutting etc to cultivate and will be bought back in a 'buy back policy'.

The continuous deforestatCurrent Scenarioion and the multiplied increase in the consumption of herbal products results in the extreme scarcity of herbs. Mass preparation of quality preparation is now not available. For example Dashamoola (the ten roots) are the main ingredients in many classical herbal preparations. Bilva, Agnimanda, Bruhathi are now a days not available in the market. Recently when I prepared 50 kilograms of Chyavanaprash, I had to order and wait for 15 days to get the root of Bilva (even though we have 10 different collecting sources). In India around 50000 tons of Chyavanaprash is prepared monthly and you could imagine the quality involved.

A computer company that is producing the maximum number of laptop will have the best perfection but this is the opposite with herbal preparation. Remember a Bala plant to produce 5 grams of root will take 6 months. Not only in herbs but also in other basic ingredients. Sesame oils of different qualities are available; the best sesame oil is having 3 times the cost than the normal ones. Sesame oil is used as the basic oil for preparing medicated oils.
