Interview With Doctor

1) How you got interested in the specialty treatment of MS?
Our family center in India even though in treating different systemic disorders which are mostly incurable in allopathic system, we used to treat similar neurological disorders what are coming under the same category.
The initial patients with MS who were coming in the late 90’s were treated in my family center. During this time I gave special interest in knowing the disease more deeply as it is occurring mostly in younger generation and more over there are no available and effective treatments for Multiple Sclerosis. Later with the same intentions I started practicing in Germany and concentrated more on MS and there I started the specialty as the success had grown in.

2) How many people you have treated with MS and what is the success rate?

So far we have treated over 50 patients and have done more than 120 treatment cycles (each treatment cycle is 45 or more days) (data from Jan 2010).
In our clinic we have patients those who are initially diagnosed to one using a wheelchair (not continuously). So I like to divide them into 4 categories:

The first category is that a Patient who is newly diagnosed having very few symptoms, till EDSS 3.5, without having visible gait disturbances (weakness and balancing deficits are not considered here), even if urinary urgency or optic neuritis is present could be brought back to normalcy – means without having MS symptoms or other signs of progression of disease in the future. It is the 13th year (2010) that the first patient had his treatment from us and is so far not having any signs of MS. This stage of MS is a curable condition.

The second category is that of  EDSS 4-5.5 , having visible walking debility, able to walk without support,  diagnosed more than 5 years, or having spasticity, incontinence, bowel control but otherwise healthy before the disease (moderate to well built, sportive, peaceful). On a complete course of DATMS therapy they could  be free from the symptoms or other signs of progression of the disease in the future, the walking ability and distance will be improved but the variation in the walking pattern (walking deformity) may or may not be removed altogether if at all improved.

At EDSS 6, if one is using a walker or walking stick within the last 6 months more for balancing than weakness, without having deformity while walking, could make few steps without help, and could walk almost the normal distance with normal pace then the walking stick or walker could be removed.
At this stage they could be free of symptoms like the optic neuritis, sensitivity disturbances, bladder or bowel symptoms, spasticity etc., avoiding any form of further progression, and to remain stable at that condition after the treatment. In this stage more than 3 treatments might be needed in 50% of the patients.

The 3rd category is EDSS of 6-7, patient walking with a walking stick or walker for over 6 months, with visible deformity and the walking distance had reduced to the fourth of the normal distance, bladder and bowel control lost for longer than 5 years, unable to make few steps independently. Here the patient needs multiple therapy and they can prevent further progression of the disease and to maintain the improvement during treatment.
The 4th stage is that the patient is already long time in the wheel chair but could make few steps with the help of a walker, EDSS 7-7.5. They need to take treatment yearly to conserve their benefits.

From EDSS 5.5 onwards the result of the treatment could be different according to the individual nature of the patient, the type of MS. A personal consultation will give more ideas on the result after the treatment.
To put it short, MS in the initial stage of the disease is a completely curable disease.
I am currently working on a table based on Ayurveda to give a more accurate method of staging of MS and their result after DATMS therapy.
I have patients in all these categories and have successes.

3) What is the best time to take the therapy?

If you read the above question one will say ‘earlier the better results’.

4 ) Are all types of MS responding to your treatment?

RRMS is having the best prognosis, PPMS needs more therapy to have the same results like the former. Secondary progressive MS is having a better prognosis than PPMS.
But I will also give consideration on - how healthy was one before the illness, mental predisposition (peaceful by nature or the contrary like getting angry anxious, fear etc) these factors can change the prognosis of the disease greatly.

5) What could be the cause of Multiple Sclerosis in your view?
There are multiple reasons involved in the cause and development of MS. At times there could be a leading reason, like family history, toxicity etc. Apart from the above reasons, multiple vaccination within a short period of time, intense mental stress for a longer duration of time or unexpected deaths in the family or other accidental stressors were also considered as the main reasons for MS or they were leading the pathology of MS. Certain infections in the past could be involved in the cause of MS. More over these factors invariably will increase the Vata dosha, derange the Pitta and there will be a qualitative decrease in Kapha. I think this is the reason why certain people are affected by this disease.
It will also be logical that apart from considering the main 3 types of MS you also need to consider MS related to Epstein bar virus or other viral causes, Environmental agents related multiple sclerosis, familial type of Multiple Sclerosis, MS with more optic nerve involvement, MS with geographical change (MS in Indian sub continent will have more involvement of Optic nerve and the disease is progressing faster.), MS with Utoph’s phenomenon etc.

6) What is your future projects related to MS?
I want to finish my book on MS.  I want to successfully treat 100 MS patients in the next 2 years.
This is to accelerate the need for insurance coverage for this treatment method, and to access and attract research on DATMS.

7) You said that there are no side effects in Ayurveda, but how a therapy without side effects can have   any effect?
This is a continuation of the above answer. Ayurvedic herbs are having synergic action. When you pour water to a wilted plant, it come backs to life by taking the essential quantity of water what is needed for its sustenance.
Likewise in Ayurvedic treatment, the therapy will add the component what is lacking in your system quantitatively and qualitatively and which will in turn modify the disease process, which is of course a positive phenomenon.

8) Why hunger and appetite or a normal gastro intestinal system is necessary for the success of DATMS therapy?
In order to get the best results from my treatment the patient needs to optimize this fire principle.
To have appétit for food a burning hunger for food are one of the signs of a healthy person.  Ayurveda also says that all the diseases could come when there is a long standing deficient assimilation of food, (with lack of hunger), or a deficient fire principle of the body where hunger is an expression of this fire principle (Agni).  This Agni or the fire principle is needed for any biological transformation happening in a cell to gross processes like digestion.
The efficiency of the treatment could be hampered by deficient Agni. So the natures of diet, quantity, your watchfulness for body’s own need for food generated by hunger are important.
